Amazing Amanda steals the show

I’ve probably seen close to 250 playoff games at Patriots Park over the last 26 years and I can’t remember a more dominant performance than the one unfurled by Bangor senior Amanda Whitford on Tuesday night in the Colonial League semis.

I’ve seen no-hitters and perfect games, and while Whitford didn’t get one of those, she did get an eye-popping 19 strikeouts in Bangor’s 3-0 win over Saucon Valley. Only one ball left the infield for the Panthers.

Whitford is only 5 feet tall, but pitches with the power of a much larger person.

She’s definitely not short on confidence. When reminded that Saucon’s Lauren Seneca hit a two-run home run against her during the regular season to help the Panthers post a 3-2 win, Whitford said, “She got lucky with that pitch because I guess she knew me [the two are summertime teammates]. But I struck her out three times this time and I’m so happy.”

Here are some of her other postgame comments with her numerous “Oh my Gods” taken out.

“I’m just so happy. That’s the best I’ve pitched all season. The drive of the fans and having the team behind me just gave me the extra oomph to go out there and pitch good. I was so focused tonight. I’m always focused, but wow, this was just crazy.”

“We’ve had the goal to do this since freshman year. I’m so happy we’re here. It has been a dream.”

“I had some extra oomph tonight, and those few extra miles-per-hour were the difference. I don’t even know how I get this much power out of me. There are girls who are like six foot tall … and I don’t know…”

She proudly noted she has broken all of the school records this season.

She has school marks for strikeouts in a game, season and career.

She has 465 Ks in her career, 260 for the season.

As for Thursday’s game, she said: “We’re going to do our best and hopefully come out with a win. If we do it, I’ll cherish that moment forever. Even if something [bad] happens, I’ll be so happy to be here. But I don’t want to think about that. It’s going to be a win.”

I didn’t get to talk to Saucon’s John Seneca after the game, but I am sure he is disappointed that his team went one-and-out for the third straight year in the league playoffs. His team lost a couple of games last week to Southern Lehigh and Palisades and seems on a downward spiral after being the league’s best team most of the season. The Panthers must regroup soon or else things won’t go any better in districts.

I did get to talk to Pen Argyl coach Bill Schankel after his team’s 5-1 loss to Northwestern and he wasn’t overly down. His young team got a tough draw. Sending a sophomore pitcher against a poised veteran like Katelyn Boyd was a difficult matchup for the Green Knights.

“Northwestern just played real well,” Schankel said. “We had chances and couldn’t get the hit when we needed it. We played all right. We made a couple of mistakes and good teams make you pay for the mistakes you make.”

I thought Schankel would start freshman Deleila Schriner who was coming off a shutout win over Bangor on Saturday for the East Division title. But Schankel said Northwestern “was all over” Schriner in the two regular season meetings between the teams — both Northwestern wins — and he wanted to give them a different look.

Sophomore Jackie Parsons didn’t pitch badly, but the bottom line is that Pen Argyl didn’t do what it has done in the past and that’s hit well against Boyd.

“You don’t beat good teams by scoring just one run,” Schankel said. “This is a new experience for some of them and we hope we can learn something from this. I thought we’d put more runs on the board, but Boyd is a good pitcher and made some adjustments and shut us down. We had the bases loaded a couple of times and didn’t score.”

Northwestern has great senior leadership. I had the chance to talk to three of them after the game — Boyd, catcher Meredith Dickson and outfielder Jackie Frisch — and was very impressed with their focus and determination.

“I’m so excited,” said Dickson, who had a big triple. “Boydie and I have been together since we were like six. It’s been a lot of fun. I want to keep playing until they say we can’t go on any further. We’d love another gold medal here on Friday night.”
